Tucson police officers fatally shot a man who they say broke into a woman’s apartment near Tucson Boulevard and Drexel Road in Tucson early Wednesday.
Just before 2 a.m., officers responded to the apartment complex for reports of a man who had forced his way into a woman’s home, was acting erratic and armed with a sharp instrument, police said. He stabbed several objects in the apartment, according to Tucson police.
Before entering the woman’s home, the man got into a fight with a neighbor and forced entry into their apartment, according to reports.
When officers responded to the domestic disturbance, they found the man in front of the woman’s apartment. She had told officers she was hiding inside. Officers told the man to drop the knife, but police say he didn’t.
Tucson police said they tried to de-escalate the situation and deployed a beanbag shotgun, which is less lethal, to get the man to drop the knife.
The man didn’t drop the knife and tried going inside the apartment, police said, and officers shot at him.
Officers and Tucson firefighters provided aid to the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
No one else was injured.
The man’s identity hadn’t been released as of Wednesday morning. Police said he knew the woman and investigators are determining their relationship.
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team responded to the scene and is investigating the shooting with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department as the leading agency. The Tucson Office of Professional Standards is conducting an internal administrative investigation.
