Keep it warm and cheap
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As temperatures plummet, heating bills can skyrocket. Of course no one wants to fork out more money, so here are some tips to keep your utility bill low. News 40 paid a visit to BGMU today to get some tips on energy efficiency, and uncover a secret you might be unfamiliar with.
Have you ever noticed that your ceiling fan doesn’t seem to cool down your room? Well it might be in winter mode! Yes you are reading correctly, winter mode. The ceiling fan has “summer mode” as well. If you look above your ceiling fan’s blades, on the motor you’ll see a small switch that moves from left to right which that switch determines which way your fan spins.
Speaking with Bowling Green Municipal Utilities Marketing Coordinator, Shelley Lowe, she told News 40 that in the warmer months, you want your fan to spin counter-clockwise. This creates an updraft to bring cooler air up from the floor and distribute it throughout the room. However, in the colder months, you want your fan to spin clockwise so that it creates a downdraft which would send down the warmer air from the ceiling to evenly heat your room.
Though it seems small, it can add up and in turn lower your utility bills. If you’re not sure by looking at the fan, you can also tell by the air circulating the room to tell if your fan is in the right mode.
She also said BGMU highly recommends having a professional service your HVAC unit once a year to make sure it is running properly, along with trying to update your appliances as needed. Age of the house also factors in to heating and cooling, so it might be a good idea to weather strip your home and cover any gaps you may have between doors or windows. Lowe said strips are very affordable at any home improvement store.
