A paving crew member was honored by Saco City Council last week for his bravery in rescuing a family from a burning home earlier this summer.
Tyler Johnson, of Windham, was working at a paving site on Cleveland Street in Saco on the morning of July 29 when another crewmember noticed that a home across the street had caught on fire. It was spreading fast.
A crew member called 911 and without hesitation, Johnson ran to enter the smoke-filled home, finding one child and a dog. He removed them from harm before making a second trip inside the home, where he found a second child and brought them to safety.
Johnson did not stop there. After learning another family member was still inside, he entered the burning building a third time to successfully rescue the children’s grandfather.
Saco City Council honored Johnson with the Citizen Heroism Award at a meeting last week, with Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail calling Johnson’s actions “selfless.”
“Because of Tyler’s actions, four lives were saved that day, and a family is still together,” MacPhail said. “That type of action and bravery is proof that heroes walk among us every day, and they will become known to us when we least expect it.”
Johnson’s employer, Shamos Paving and Sealcoating, also praised Johnson for his actions that day. Business owner Andy Shamos took to social media to thank Johnson for his efforts.
“Not all heroes wear capes — some wear work boots,” Shamos wrote. “Tyler is an unsung hero. A regular guy who acted when it mattered the most. We couldn’t be prouder to have him on our team.”

The family rescued from the burning house is especially grateful for Johnson’s actions. Audrey Tripodi, who was asleep when the house caught on fire, said Johnson saved her life.
“If it wasn’t for you, I probably wouldn’t be here right now,” Tripodi said. “There’s no way to measure that kind of bravery and selflessness. Just know that I’ll carry your name and what you did for me in my heart forever.”
MacPhail said it is “an honor” when she gets to say “thank you” to someone who has gone above and beyond to protect the Saco community.
“On behalf of the city of Saco, the Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to aid that day, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for the quick, courageous actions of Tyler Johnson,” MacPhail said.
Johnson was unable to be reached for comment before publication.
