Carlos Alcaraz has certainly not played his best tennis at Wimbledon so far, losing two sets to Italian veteran Fabio Fognini on his debut and a set to Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round. His level has been characterized by numerous ups and downs so far and his run has been decidedly less brilliant than those of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, who have used high gears since the first matches.
The world No.2 – who has triumphed in the tournament in the last two editions – is aware that he needs to work on some aspects of his game if he wants to lift the trophy at Church Road for the third year in a row, an achievement that would allow him to take a further step in tennis history.
After a start to the season below expectations, the 22-year-old Spaniard has definitely changed gears since the beginning of the red clay season, winning two Masters 1000 (Monte Carlo and Rome) and a Slam (Roland Garros).
As if that wasn’t enough, the star from Murcia also won at the Queen’s Club for the second time in his young career and came into the Championships with huge expectations.
Alcaraz faces Rublev
The former world number 1 faces Andrey Rublev in the round of 16, with the Russian ace trying in every way to find the right path after the serious crisis that has hit him in the last year and a half. His compatriot Marat Safin is helping him on this path and the first fruits of their collaboration have already been seen.
In a brief interview with ‘Championat’, former world No.1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov was asked how many chances Rublev has of beating Alcaraz at Wimbledon today: “I’m not Andrey’s mentor and I’m not here to give him advice, but it’s clear that he doesn’t have much of a chance. Carlos starts as a clear favorite in this match, in fact I would say that the odds are 90-10 in favor of the Spaniard.”
The player from Moscow defeated Carlitos at the Mutua Madrid Open last year.
