MORNING HEADLINES | Charleston’s Emma Navarro, the 10th-seeded women’s tennis player in Wimbledon, lost Monday in the 4th round against 7th-seeded Mirra Andreeva in a 6-2, 6-3 match.
Navarro approached the net to congratulate Andreeva on the global win, but Andreeva was at the back of the court, preparing to face serve, before it clicked that she had won.
“In the end I completely forgot the score,” Andreeva said in an on-court interview. “I’m happy that I did it because I think that (otherwise) I would be three times more nervous on the match point.”
With the win, 18-year-old Andreeva became the youngest player since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007 to reach the women’s quarterfinals at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament.
