DENVER (KDVR) — A young boy is suffering from life-threatening injuries after he was shot at his home in Aurora on Monday morning.
The Aurora Police Department said just before 10:30 a.m., it responded to Kaiser Permanente Aurora Centrepoint Medical Offices after a 4-year-old was shot at an apartment complex just off East Centrepoint Drive in Aurora.
The mother told police that she heard a gunshot in the house, which is when she found her son. Police said she took the boy to the urgent care down the street before he was transferred to a local children’s hospital, and he is currently in critical condition.
The grandmother, who was also in the house, was taken to the hospital for a medical incident, although police said she wasn’t shot.
During the initial investigation, police said they don’t believe the gunshot was self-inflicted, and that someone in the house was possibly playing with a handgun when they shot the child. At the time of the shooting, police said there were several people in the house, including three children and the father of the boy who was shot.
The father left the house after the shooting, and police are currently looking for him to gather more information on his involvement and why he left. Police believe a child is currently with the father, but the father isn’t currently a suspect.
The shooting is still being investigated. Police said they are obtaining a warrant to search the house and look for more evidence.
Officers are still securing the scene, and crime scene investigators, as well as investigators with crimes against children and investigators with the major crimes unit, will be on scene.
Police said the shooting could still be a crime depending on the circumstances leading up to shooting, if anyone in the house was prohibited from having firearms and if the firearm was unsafely stored.
