Will Smith has admitted that he ‘lost it’ when he went on stage at the Oscars and slapped Chris Rock in the face after a joke had been made about Smith‘s wife.
The televised event went viral for many many weeks considering the profile of the two stars involved.
Speaking in his first late-night interview since the event earlier in the year, Smith explained that he had been dealing with a lot mentally at the time and he lost his cool at that moment.
“I was gone,” Smith said on Comedy Central’s program, ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’.
“That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time,” Smith said.
The actor told Noah he was “going through something” and lost his cool that night.
“That was a horrific night as you can imagine,” he said. “There’s many nuances and complexities to it, you know, but at the end of the day, I just – I lost it and I guess what I would say [is] you just never know what somebody’s going through.”
There was no clear answer as to what Smith had actually been dealing with at the time to make him react like that to the comedian on stage who was hosting the awards.
“It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother. It’s, you know, all of that just bubbled up at that moment,” he said. “That’s not who I want to be.”
Smith also talked about returning from the Oscars that night to his nine-year-old nephew.
“He is the sweetest little boy. We came home and he had stayed up late to see his uncle Will and we’re sitting in my kitchen and he’s on my lap and he’s holding the Oscar and he’s just like ‘Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?’,” Smith said, tearing up.
