Red Sox
“We think we’ve got a good chance to make a deep postseason run.”

A Red Sox season that opened with so much potential is seemingly already on the brink of disaster.
Following a loss to the Angels on Wednesday afternoon, the Red Sox have lost five games in a row and now sit at 40-42 on the season. According to FanGraphs, Boston has just a 16.6 percent shot of making the postseason.
Despite dealing away their best hitter in Rafael Devers earlier this month, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow stressed that Boston wasn’t viewing that trade as the precursor to a larger roster sell-off amid a lackluster campaign.
“This is in no way signifying a waving of the white flag on 2025,” Breslow said earlier this month. “We are as committed as we were six months ago to putting a winning team on the field, to competing for the division and making a deep postseason run.”
During an appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Thursday morning, Breslow once again stressed that Boston isn’t looking to further strip its roster of talent despite the recent underwhelming returns.
“We would be looking to improve our team,” Breslow said. “We would be looking to improve our team for 2025. Because despite the fact that we haven’t been able to string together the consistent performance that we think we’re capable of, we’re still very much staring down a Wild Card chance.
“And nobody has really run away with the AL East. So as we start to get healthy and we start to look externally about ways that can improve the team, we think we’ve got a good chance to make a deep postseason run.”
Despite Breslow’s focus on the Red Sox adding at the deadline, Boston could make the most of a lost season by dealing away more key pieces off the roster before the July 31 trade deadline.
ESPN compiled a list of the top trade chips in baseball on Tuesday, with Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran leading the way at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Closer Aroldis Chapman was ranked No. 18 on that same list, while struggling starter Walker Buehler was ranked No. 28 overall.
