SCOTIA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A long-standing Capital Region Independence Day Celebration that has been lighting up the sky for decades went off without a hitch on Friday night, under cloudy skies. The annual Jumpin’ Jacks and now for the second year incorporated with the Village of Scotia, this year’s Independence Day Fireworks brought in thousands of spectators who waited all afternoon with anticipation of a big show that would not disappoint.
All afternoon people here have been getting ready for the show. “We are here for the fireworks,” said one small group sitting at Freedom Park.
One woman said, “It’s my first time and I have lived in Schenectady for about 10 years.”
“I’m very excited,” said another attendee.
The partnership with the village allowed Jumpin’ Jacks owner Mark Lansing to help keep folks safe and a provide the community with a lot more to do than ever before. “We reached out a couple of years ago to ask for help because the expense for all the police and 1st responders got to be pretty, pretty high.” He said, “Everything you see in Collins Park, the extra stage, some of the food trucks, all that stuff is them [The Village of Scotia] trying to round out the event and make it family friendly and make it a thing to do all day long.”
On the Jumpin’ Jacks side the US Waterski Show Team continued the tradition of kicking of the event. “All I knew about really was the ski show and the fireworks, no idea about any of the bands,” said young woman.
After the water ski show the crowds were ready and waiting for the free concert held at Freedom Park just before the big fireworks show. “I always liked fireworks since I was little. I just like all the colors,” explained one young girl who was sitting along the Mohawk River.
And after the concert fans were treated to a spectacular fireworks display. Lansing told NEWS10’s Reporter James De La Fuente that the threat of tariffs was not a concern when preparing for this year’s show. He said, “The cost has been the same for the last few years. Thankfully, working with young fireworks, they let me set the price and I give them a few details and what kind of show I’d like them to shoot and then they fill in the blanks.”
If you missed the action in Scotia NEWS10 will air New York State’s Fireworks Show on July 4 next Friday from the Empire State Plaza. You can watch from home with no traffic or large crowds afterwards.
