CHESHIRE, Conn. (WTNH) — Incarcerated individuals at Cheshire Correctional Institute are participating in a food strike, according to a release from the Connecticut Department of Corrections (DOC).
The strike, according to the DOC, is in part to protest the number of times the facility has been placed on lockdown recently.
Grievances of the group also include the quality of the food served and demands for better medical and mental health services.
According to the DOC, the DOC Master Menu, Common Fare (Kosher) Menu and Non-Animal menu are all developed according to guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The strike began when seven people began abstaining from food at lunch on July 7. An additional person joined the group one day later.
As of Monday, only two people remain striking from food.
Shortly after, staff at the facility began meeting with the striking individuals to address their concerns, according to the DOC.
“The Department takes the health and safety of all individuals in our custody very seriously,” Deputy Commissioner William Mulligan said. “We respect the rights of individuals to voice their concerns; we are reviewing their demands to determine what can be addressed within the framework of departmental policy and public safety.”
