Friday’s episode of SmackDown delivered a bombshell ahead of Survivor Series: WarGames when CM Punk claimed Paul Heyman owed him a favor—a mysterious arrangement some fans are assuming dates back to June.
The favor wasn’t revealed on Friday, and Heyman appeared to deliberately avoid sharing its details with Reigns. What’s clear, however, is that this mystery will likely become a pivotal element in the evolving storyline between Punk, Heyman, and Reigns.
What Was The Favor Punk Was Referring To?
In the segment, Punk said, “One match, one favor.” When Reigns assumed it would be himself who had to return it, he was told by Punk the favor wasn’t from him, but rather from “our Wiseman,” Paul Heyman. Reigns, visibly unsettled by what that meant, asked Heyman after Punk walked out. Heyman dodged the question and suggested they “get through WarGames” first.
This cryptic exchange got the WWE Universe talking. Many were theorizing what Punk’s favor could be. Those who recalled the June interaction between Punk and Heyman wondered if that segment included clues.
Back then, Punk saved Heyman from harassment by the New Bloodline, asking Heyman what the favor he needed at the time was. Heyman’s whispered plea, “Take me with you,” hinted at his desire to be free of The Bloodline and aligned with Punk. Perhaps Heyman was concerned he could no longer trust the Anoa’i family. Could this favor mark the beginning of a seismic shift in the Bloodline storyline?

Immediate assumptions that Heyman and Punk are going to turn heel on Roman might be jumping the gun. Punk is not a heel, so, while there is no love lost between the two, turning on Reigns and The Original Bloodline doesn’t make much sense from a storyline perspective. Still, Punk’s insistence that Heyman owes him—and not Reigns—introduces tension within the faction.
The favor could be personal to Punk, aimed at reasserting himself in the title picture. While Reigns is not currently the champion, Punk may be setting things up so that if that day comes with Roman is at the top of the mountain again, Punk is first in line. Could Punk getting a guaranteed shot against Reigns potentially put him on a collision course with The Original Tribal Chief? Punk knows that Heyman can make that match happen.
Does Punk Want Heyman All To Himself?
The most intriguing possibility is that Punk’s favor connects to Heyman’s plea in June: “Take me with you.” If Heyman asked for Punk and Punk wants his Wiseman back, this could lead to Heyman leaving Reigns for his old client. Heyman may not have to betray Reigns to break his heart and that could lead to a clash between Punk and Roman.
Whatever the favor entails, the SmackDown segment masterfully set the stage for major developments at Survivor Series: WarGames.
