U.S. Senator Katie Britt endorsed state Representative Rhett Marques, R-Enterprise, on Thursday as he enters the Republican primary for Alabama’s 1st Congressional District.
Britt not only endorsed Marques but also contributed $10,000 from her Alabama First leadership PAC, a clear sign of her intent to help position him as the frontrunner in the race.
In her endorsement, Britt praised Marques as “a great friend and a strong conservative fighter who has always had my back and President Trump’s.” She described him as a candidate who understands the district because of his deep roots there, noting that he was born and raised in Baldwin County and is now raising a family in the Wiregrass.
“I am excited about the fresh leadership Rhett is bringing to the table and congratulate him on launching his campaign for Congress. I have no doubt that the First Congressional District will thrive with Rhett at the helm,” said Britt.
The $10,000 donation from Britt’s PAC represents the maximum contribution federal rules allow. Early financial support underscores the strength of her backing and gives Marques a boost as he begins building his campaign war chest.
Leadership PAC contributions also serve as a political signal to donors and voters, showing that Marques has the trust of one of Alabama’s most prominent politicians.
Marques will face former Congressman Jerry Carl, who previously held the seat and is campaigning to reclaim it. Representative Barry Moore, who represents the 1st Congressional District after redistricting last year, has chosen not to seek another House term and instead is pursuing a run for U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s seat in the U.S. Senate.
