NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – We’ve been monitoring three spots in the Atlantic for tropical development and we may soon be dropping down to only two.
First, let’s talk now Post-Tropical Storm Dexter…
As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said that Dexter had become a “storm-force extratropical low over the North Atlantic” and would no longer continue issuing advisories for it.
Dexter is located about 390-miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland and moving east-northeastward at 17-mph with maximum sustained winds clocked at 60-mph.
Its tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185-miles from the center.
The NHC forecast it to “continue strengthening as an extratropical low through early Friday then weaken beginning late Friday and Saturday.”
Next up, we are still monitoring a “non-tropical area of low pressure that is expected to form over the next day or day” about a few hundred miles for North Carolina’s coast.
According to the NHC, “some tropical or subtropical development is possible this weekend while the system moves northeastward over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream off the east coast of the United States,” but its being forecasted to reach colder water and “more hostile” conditions by early next week which will end its chances of further development.
Formation over the next 48-hours is at 10% and about 20% for the next 7-days.
And thirdly, there’s still a tropical wave lingering in the central tropical Atlantic that’s said to be producing disorganized showers.
According to the NHC, the “environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for gradual development in a few days, and a tropical depression could form late this weekend or early next week while the system moves west-northwestward or northwestward.”
Formation chances are 10% over the next 48-hours and 60% for the next 7-days.
