COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Thousands of people in the Capital Region took part in those nationwide ‘No Kings’ protests. The energy was charged at rallies that took place in Troy and Colonie.
In Troy, 1,300 people shouted, as they marched downtown and made their way across the Green Island bridge.
Troy police officers shut down the bridge on Saturday morning, allowing protesters to safely march across the bridge.
Bryan Paz-Hernandez is the chair of Troy Indivisible. He helped organize the rally.
“We wanted to do this march because it’s a national day of action. We’re seeing these all across the country today. They’re expecting millions of Americans to be on the streets today and so we wanted to do our part in Troy,” said Paz-Hernandez.
He said there was one goal with the gathering at Riverfront Park. “We have to make it very clear to the Trump administration, we’re not ok with this,” said Paz-Hernandez.
Nicole Margiasso is the director of organizing for Planned Parenthood of Greater New York and spoke at the rally.
“Today is a day to be in solidarity with all people across this country who know what this country really stands for and are gonna fight for our rights and democracy,” said Margiasso.
John and Peggy Watrous are retired art teachers and admired the creativity of the signs.
“This is heaven because these people went to a lot of trouble to make their signs, and some of them are so clever and so wonderfully made,” said Peggy.
They said they’ve participated in protests for decades and this is the largest one in recent years.
“It’s very exhilarating because there are so many people that feel like we do,” said John.
