HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Thousands of demonstrators from across the state gathered at the Connecticut State Capitol on Saturday as a part of the nationwide “No Kings Day” protests.
Demonstrators gathered to share their disdain for the Trump administration’s campaigns of deportations, deployments of military personnel in Los Angeles and more.
“We just don’t like what we’re seeing with the state of our country and this is something easy to do so we wanted to show our support,” said Riley from Manchester.
Chants echoed from the steps of the Capitol to other towns and cities across Connecticut.
“I believe in democracy and I believe in the Constitution and believe in women’s rights and Black Lives Matter and everything under the sun,” said Glastonbury native Lisanna. “And I think it’s time to protest and let people know that we are here and we want to come out and share our side.”
Supporters of the president showed up at the Capitol to voice their opinion. Some displayed vocal opposition, others like state Rep. Joe Hoxha (R-Bristol) came to observe.
“Just out here on a lovely Saturday afternoon checking out what’s going on,” Hoxha said. “Just think about it, if Trump was really a king and if we really lived in a monarchy or a dictatorship, you wouldn’t be able to do this right now.”
A moment of silence was held for the victims of the morning’s political assassination in Minnesota, which claimed the lives of state Rep. Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband Mark.
State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were injured by the same suspect.
“We have to take care of each other and support each other…yeah,” said demonstrator David Ames.
