EVANSTON, Ill. (WGN) – There was no shortage of patriotism at one of the largest Fourth of July parades around.
Thousands of people braved the heat to watch the parade travel through downtown Evanston.
“We’re here with friends and neighbors to honor 250 years of the United States, and we’re here to be with our friends and family and to enjoy the day and to appreciate what America really is about,” attendee Kendra Coleman said.
The sights and sounds of the marching bands and performances kept the crowd cheering all afternoon.
Many folks WGN-TV encountered knew at least one person participating in the parade, including the youngest paradegoers.
“My grandma is in the parade and a bunch of my friends, so I’m really excited, rooting for them,” attendee Teodora said.
Evanston’s Fourth of July parade has been around for over 100 years. It’s become so popular that it can be hard to find a spot to watch it go by.
So much so that many people put out lawn chairs earlier this week to get the best view of the show.
“So our wonderful neighbors here camped out like super early on Wednesday I think it was, and they said, ‘Hey, do you want to join?’ So we have crashed,” Coleman said.
The Fourth of July festivities continued with a concert at 7:30 p.m. and a fireworks show at 9:30 p.m.
