ST. LOUIS – The Muny in Forest Park wrapped up its 107th season Sunday night with its final show of the musical “Jersey Boys.”
“10,000 people come out every night,” Kwofe Coleman, president and CEO of The Muny, said. “They’ve made this a part of their tradition and part of their family.”
Showgoers said that The Muny offers outdoor summer fun with entertainment, and it’s something everyone should at least experience once.
“We used to come as kids,” friends, Nancy McGrath and Janet Sherel said. “My parents brought me, my mom bought me all the time, I brought my kids … we loved it, it’s a long tradition.”
Critics agreed that the amphitheater deserved to be recognized, awarding it the Best Regional Theatre Tony Award this year.
“To be recognized on a national level,” Coleman said. “It’s an award that we receive, but it’s on behalf of this whole city.”
With musical hits like “Jersey Boys,” “Bring It On: The Musical,” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” The Muny brought Broadway to Forest Park each week this summer since mid-June, and then some.
“Yes, being able to come here for 12 years now, 13 years now, just the caliber of talent that’s here and then just the experience, I mean, to be able to sit in the open sky, to see the stars, you hear planes go overhead and to just have 11,000 people every night around you cheering clap, it’s just such a fun experience,” Todd Garton said.
“Some for the family, some exciting, some happy, some that make you think, some make you sing, some make you cry,” Coleman said. “The point is that we try to have a list or the Muny of shows that when people are here for a whole summer, they go on an artistic or emotional journey with us.”
There is one concert left at The Muny for the season featuring musicians Diana Ross and John Batiste Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. For more information on tickets.
