Over a month after a 37-year-old woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Hollywood — devastating her husband and a wide circle of loved ones — police confirmed they have arrested the man suspected of being behind the wheel.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the arrest to KTLA on Thursday and identified the suspect as Davontay Robins. He is accused of fleeing the scene after hitting Erika Edwards on the night of June 29.
The crash happened just after 9 p.m. near the intersection of West Sunset Boulevard and North Sierra Bonita Avenue, according to the LAPD. Edwards had just performed at a fundraiser for the LGBTQ+ and pole communities and was returning to her car when she was struck by a dark-colored Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.
She died at the scene. The driver failed to stop, identify themselves and attempt to render aid. Police said speed may have been a factor in the deadly crash.
In a heartbreaking Instagram post, her husband, Kris Edwards, described her as his soulmate and said the couple had just closed escrow on a new home days before the crash. They were planning to start a family.
“The world just got a lot darker because we’ve lost such a beautiful light,” he wrote. “The amount of lives that she has touched and changed will be the memory that I hold onto forever.”
Kris said he tracked Erika’s phone to a vehicle belonging to the L.A. County Medical Examiner parked near a Wendy’s drive-thru down the road from the crash.
A GoFundMe organized by the victim’s sister-in-law is helping the family with memorial costs.
At the time of the incident, a $50,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver.
