Temperatures should back down a few degrees for afternoon highs
The stretch of hot August weather kept its grip on Central and Eastern Kentucky Tuesday, as an upper-level ridge of high pressure lingered over the region. Afternoon highs pushed into the upper 80s and low 90s, and when you factored in the humidity, it felt just a touch hotter. Sunshine dominated for most of the day with mainly dry skies, though some relief is on the way as we look ahead to midweek.
Storm Chances Return Midweek
A frontal boundary will dip into the Ohio Valley on Wednesday, bringing back the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could even pop late Tuesday night into early Wednesday as a preview of what’s to come. While coverage won’t be widespread, any storms that develop could pack a punch with heavy downpours and gusty winds. For areas that miss the rain, expect a mix of sun and clouds with highs settling back into the mid to upper 80s—right on target for late August. This same cold front will also play a role in steering Hurricane Erin out to sea, though the Outer Banks of North Carolina may still feel some coastal impacts.
Late Week Stays Warm but Manageable
Behind Wednesday’s front, the late week pattern looks drier and a bit less muggy. Highs will remain seasonably warm, in the upper 80s to around 90 both Thursday and Friday, but humidity levels should be more tolerable than what we’ve felt the past few days. That’s good news with the high school football season kicking off Friday night—still warm for the early games, but storm chances look minimal and shouldn’t cause any big issues.
Refreshing Change This Weekend
The real payoff arrives this weekend as another cold front sweeps through the Ohio Valley. A few showers or storms are possible Saturday, but the bigger story will be the refreshing air mass that settles in behind it. By Sunday, highs will only reach the upper 70s and low 80s with much lower humidity—an early taste of fall for late August. Morning lows could even dip into the 50s early next week, making for some of the most comfortable weather we’ve seen in weeks.
