The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities transit system, StarTran, today announced the completion of a mural on the south-facing wall of the temporary bus transfer center at South 11th and “L” streets. Lincoln artist, illustrator and StarTran rider Hannah Ashburn completed the mural in late-June.
“During our community engagement efforts, we received requests to visually enhance the area around the temporary transit location in some way,” said Carla Cosier, Assistant Director of Transit. “We loved this idea and were able to identify a regular StarTran rider who was also an artist, and conversations about painting a mural began.”
Ashburn presented four mural concepts to StarTran team members who voted to select the final design.
“It was important for our transit team to have a voice in the process,” Cosier said. “They care deeply about our riders and community, and were proud to support the mural and what it represents.”
StarTran provided $465 for paint and other materials for the project. The temporary transfer center will remain at the South 11th and “L” streets for an estimated three years while a new state-of-the-art multi-modal transportation center is constructed on the block bordered by Ninth, 10th, “G” and “H” streets.
Ashburn said her depiction of yellow wildflowers took about one month to complete and is designed to bring nature and green spaces into an urban environment in an artistic way.
“I have been a public transit user for years and this is one way I can give back to other transit riders like myself here in Lincoln,” Ashburn said. “I love that I get to be a part of this project, making commuters and business owners excited to see art tie their spaces together – a mutual love for human decency.”
The location of the mural is also important because public transit is a vital part of the community, Ashburn added.
“In my adult life, I ride the bus out of necessity and out of fun. I ride the bus in negative degree temperatures and high-degree temperatures. When I was younger, I would watch my mother utilize transit services to get to her job. Transit is essential to all of our community members.”
