Berlin (dpa/d.de) – The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has spoken to the French President Emmanuel Macron and the UK Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer to discuss the conflict between Israel and Iran. In telephone conversations, Merz, Macron and Starmer considered the Israeli strikes against Iran’s nuclear programme, as well Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Israel. There has been no announcement about the outcome of the talks.
Germany has also stepped up security around Israeli and Jewish organisations in Germany. Merz announced the measures following a meeting of the Security Cabinet in response to Israel’s attack on Iran. A written statement issued by the Chancellor said the meeting had agreed to “take all steps necessary to protect German nationals in Israel, Iran and the region.” On a visit to Cairo, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said, “we condemn in the strongest possible terms Iran’s indiscriminate attacks against Israel.” He added that the developments were “deeply concerning.”
