Springfield, Mo. – On Monday, Aug. 11, retired Police Service Dog Ronin died at home, surrounded by his family. He was 10 years old. Ronin served SPD loyally for seven years before retiring in 2023 to live with his handler, retired Officer Jeff Henson.
Ronin began his career in 2016 as a dual-purpose police service dog, trained to locate and apprehend suspects, locate narcotics, and search for evidence. In his 525 career deployments, he is credited with 70 arrests and 90 narcotics finds. Ronin retired in December 2023 with quite a reputation within the department.
“He hated everyone and bit more cops than bad guys, but he chose to love two people on this planet: me and my wife,” Henson said. “She took pride in being able to bond with a world class curmudgeon.”
In his well-earned retirement, Ronin loved to play tug, go for walks, lounge on the couch, and bark at anything on the TV. Ronin was laid to rest at Lakeland Pet Cemetery at Rivermonte Memorial Gardens.
