Steve Blackman has finally opened up about just how brutal his WWE run really was — and it’s way worse than fans ever imagined. The former WWE Hardcore Champion revealed that debilitating migraines caused by bone spurs in his neck plagued nearly 80% of his in-ring career.
During his appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Blackman didn’t hold back when explaining the hell he endured behind the scenes. The migraines were triggered by four bone spurs pressing on his nerves — and they left him in constant, unbearable pain.
“I’m going to say, 80% of my run. It was brutal.”
He described a relentless cycle of migraines that would completely shut him down, sometimes within seconds of stepping in the ring.
“It would be like Monday I’d wrestle and get a migraine… I mean feels like you’re being stabbed in your head. Throw up, lay down, throw up, lay down, go to bed. The next day, sleep all day, wrestle the next day the migraine again. It’d be like every other day I’d have a migraine.”
The physical toll reached horrifying levels during matches, especially hardcore bouts that required intense physicality. Blackman recalled one particular match with Kane that nearly broke him.
“You can’t imagine what it’s like getting forearmed or body slammed when you have a migraine, you feel like a grenade went off in your head. I wrestled Kane one night in a hardcore match… The migraine kicked in in one second… Every time he hit me, I felt like a grenade was going off. And that was the beginning of the match. We had 15 minutes more to go.”
Ironically, Blackman said the hardcore style helped protect his neck to some extent, since using weapons and relying on speed meant fewer painful bumps.
Now years removed from the ring, Blackman has undergone two neck surgeries that have greatly improved his quality of life. In fact, he admits he’s finally feeling good enough that the idea of a return has even crossed his mind.
“There are days I feel good, and the thought of doing a match crosses my mind.”
Steve Blackman might be remembered for his stoic, lethal persona in WWE, but behind the scenes, he was pushing through unimaginable pain every time he stepped into the ring.
