(KRON) — A security guard was arrested Wednesday after allegedly running down a child on a bike with a private security vehicle at San Rafael’s Northgate Mall, according to police.
The San Rafael Police Department responded around 4:30 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting that a juvenile was run over in the Northgate Mall’s parking lot by a security vehicle. Witnesses told police that the security guard, later identified as Melvin Anthony Kennedy, 66, of Oakland, had been yelling at kids on the bottom floor of the parking structure and then began to chase them in a security vehicle before the collision, SRPD said.
Kennedy fled from the crash after briefly stopping, according to police.
Arriving San Rafael Fire Department paramedics provided medical aid to the child, whose age was not released, before transporting them to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, Kennedy was working as a security employee of a private security company contracted to patrol the mall. He allegedly became upset after the group of juveniles tore down caution tape that was closing off a portion of the parking area.
Kennedy was arrested after he returned to the scene and surrendered himself during the active police investigation, SRPD said. He was booked into the Marin County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon/vehicle and felony child abuse.
