Free museum pass? Yes, please!
Seattle Public Library card holders can now get free admission to two new museums: the Seattle Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum and the Volunteer Park Conservatory.
All it takes to secure your pass is a visit to the library’s online reservation system, search by museum or date, and you’ll be able to reserve two to four adult tickets.
Passes are available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. You’ll be limited to one pass per month based on the date of the visit, not when you make the reservation.
But be quick about it. There is limited availability, so book as soon as you can, the library advises. New passes are available everyday after 12 p.m.
The 3.5-acre Japanese Garden was crafted in 1960 by the world-renowned Japanese garden designer Juki Iida and includes winding gravel paths, stone benches and bridges that guide the way through foliage, rock and water features.
The garden usually sells tickets from $6 to $10, but is free the first Thursday of each month. The park also offers two free guided tours a day Tuesday through Friday and the first Saturday of the month.
At the Volunteer Park Conservatory, opened in 1912, visitors can gander at a wide collection of plant species from around the world within the glass structure modeled after Victorian conservatories of Europe.
You can also visit the conservatory for free the first Thursday of the month, and those 12 and under can get free admission Saturdays with a paying adult. Otherwise, a regular ticket is $4 to $6.
Didn’t know you could get free admission to museums through the Seattle Public Library? Well, you’re in for a treat. The Japanese Garden and Conservatory join the ranks of the library’s free access to 13 other museums across Seattle:
- Burke Museum
- Center for Wooden Boats:
- Henry Art Gallery
- Museum of Flight
- Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI)
- Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP)
- National Nordic Museum
- Northwest African American Museum
- Seattle Aquarium
- Seattle Art Museum
- Seattle Children’s Museum
- Wing Luke Museum
- Woodland Park Zoo
King County Library System also has a free museum pass program. It includes some of those Seattle museums, such as MoPOP, but also others nearby such as the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.
