(FOX 5/KUSI) — Police are warning rideshare users to stay vigilant after a woman was sexually assaulted by a man posing as a rideshare driver in Pacific Beach.
The assault happened in March, but detectives say they have exhausted leads and are now asking the public for help in identifying the suspect.
The San Diego Police Department says the sexual assault happened just after 1 a.m. on March 15 in the 700 block of Grand Avenue.
According to investigators, the victim had been out drinking when she requested a rideshare. She mistakenly got into a vehicle she believed was her ride.
Police say the suspect drove the woman a few miles away before parking and sexually assaulting her. She was eventually able to escape and make it home, where she reported the incident to police.
Lt. Travis Easter is urging rideshare users to always verify driver and vehicle details through the app before getting in a car.
He also recommends that the rider share trip information with friends or family whenever possible.
“If you order a rideshare, make sure you verify the information. Look who the driver is,” Easter said. “Let your friends know who is picking you up, when you’re expected to arrive. If you don’t show up, they’ll know to start asking questions.”
The suspect is described as a mixed-race man, approximately 30 years old, with brown eyes, a medium muscular build, shoulder-length hair, a large nose, mustache and beard. He may be driving a newer model four-door Toyota Prius or a similar vehicle.
San Diego Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Authorities also believe there may be additional victims who have not come forward.
Rideshare riders say the incident is a frightening reminder to always take extra precautions, especially when using rideshare services at night.
“It’s horrible… super scary,” said Maddie Mendez, who frequently visits Pacific Beach with friends. “Just really be super cautious about it.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Diego Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
