(FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego’s neighborhood shuttle service in the central part of the city is scheduled to end at the start of July.
The city’s website says that “FRED service,” which is also known as Circuit, will be discontinued on July 1.
FOX 5/KUSI reached out to the city for a statement, but has not received a response as of publishing time.
A spokesperson told KNSD that the program is ending as part of cuts to city services due to the budget shortfall.
The service consists of rides on a shared shuttle throughout downtown and surrounding areas, primarily west of Interstate 5 from Laurel St. in the north to around Sigsbee St. in the south.
The shuttle vehicles started in 2016 and provided rides for $2.50 per person, with discounts for groups. The service was run by Circuit, which operates in other cities, including Chula Vista and Oceanside.
San Diego operates a similar service in Mid-City, and nearby cities have implemented shared rides, including El Cajon and Vista.
