SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fall semester officially kicked off at San Diego State University on Monday, welcoming new students, new experiences and even a new degree in artificial intelligence.
SDSU’s College of Arts and Letters has added a new option for students in the form of a Bachelor of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence and Human Responsibility.
According to the university, the degree is meant to teach students how to understand and use AI in an “ethical and sustainable manner.” Upon graduating, students with the degree will be able to use hands-on skills such as proficiency in tools such as Python and GIS, and enter careers in technology, policymaking, and social impact among others.
Prerequisites to apply for the major include 26 units with courses including computer science, renewable energy, philosophy, statistics and environmental science.
Students who intend to graduate with the degree must complete required courses such as Technology, Personhood, and the Body, Spatial Data Analysis, Ethics and Artificial Intelligence and others.
In addition, students must complete 21 units of electives which can be chosen depending on their own particular interests, but must fit under three categories: Advanced Technical Methodologies; Ethical, Social, and Cultural Analysis; and Environmental Decision-Making.
That’s not all that prospective and current Aztecs have to be excited about this year.
This fall, SDSU expected the combined enrollment between its Imperial Valley and San Diego campuses to surpass 40,000 students, a record number in the university’s history.
