SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego County Fair is packing up and shipping out after another successful season of bringing in tens of thousands of people each day, but lost items go hand in hand with large crowds.
“Just the normal glasses, keys, wallets, purses, water bottles. We have probably 25 or 30 water bottles,” said San Diego County Fair Guest Services Coordinator, Gail Tompkins.
Items turned in this year also include an e-bike and a pair of dog noise cancelling headphones.
“The strangest thing probably over all the years was the brain scan, someone actually brought their x-ray, brain scan, to the fair,” said Tompkins.
Though the brain scan was never reclaimed, lost items can be picked up until September when they will be donated. Given the size of the crowd, the number lost items isn’t surprising.
“If you average it out from last year, it was about 150 fewer people per day. When you’re talking about 43,000-44,000 which is where we were at it, it’s sort of negligible,” said San Diego County Fair Chief Communications Officer, Tristan Hallman.
Though the turnout was strong, Hallman says there was misinformation online ahead of the fair.
“…that there were these federal law enforcement busts happening live at the fair or that they were here,” said Hallman.
Information that wasn’t true, something Hallman says other popular venues throughout Southern California have also been dealing with.
“I think we saw some fear mongering for sure. We saw some misinformation online about things that were going on here,” said Hallman.
Though it’s still impossible to pinpoint why attendance was slightly lower.
“It’s still a great crowd, you know, that’s a sellout at a Padres game,” said Hallman.
You can pick up lost items at guest services on Monday or Tuesday before they are moved to a different building. They’ll hold on to everything until September when it will be donated. Call 858-794-1124 to make an appointment to pick up your stuff.
