NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The tropics continue to be quiet locally with nothing happening in the Gulf or Caribbean. However activity is picking up a bit farther to the east.
An area off the southeast coast is now being given a medium chance of development over the next seven days from the NHC at 40%. This has a chance to be like Chantal earlier in the season where it develops very close to the coast as it moves north, although again the chance overall is low.
A stronger wave coming off Africa has a medium chance of development the next few days as it moves west. However this will not be an issue for anywhere near the Gulf.
Locally we will continue to see more standard early August weather. Today the rain chances will be a bit more widespread than Monday. That combined with more cloud cover will keep temperatures mainly in the upper 80s through the day with highs topping out around 90. We will stick with this pattern through Thursday before drier conditions heat us back up by Friday through the weekend.
By the weekend a tropical wave moving west across the Gulf could bring higher rain chances back to the area. At the moment it still looks like the time frame starting around the 15th will be when we really need to watch the potential for tropical development.
