Scattered storms will increase to close out the month of Thursday
Wednesday brought another scorcher across Central and Eastern Kentucky as the relentless late July heat wave showed no signs of letting up—at least for now. With a strong ridge of high pressure still parked over the Ohio Valley, sunshine and dry conditions sent afternoon highs soaring into the low to mid-90s, and with humidity factored in, heat index values surged past 100° once again. The good news? This stretch of stifling heat is finally winding down.
Cold Front Brings Storms and Relief Thursday
A cold front will drop into the region Thursday, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening. These storms could deliver heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning, thanks to the abundant moisture in place. While Thursday will still be warm and a bit muggy—with highs in the upper 80s to near 90°—this front marks the beginning of a cooler and less humid stretch just in time for August.
A Refreshing Change to Start August
As the front sinks south Thursday night into Friday, moderate and drier air will filter in, finally breaking the grip of the oppressive heat. Friday may still feature a few lingering scattered storms, but it’ll feel noticeably better with highs in the low 80s and lower humidity arriving later in the day. By Friday night, you’ll really notice the difference, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 50s in some areas—truly refreshing for this time of year.
Fantastic Weekend Weather Ahead
Saturday looks absolutely beautiful with sunshine, lower humidity, and highs in the low 80s. If you’ve been putting off any outdoor plans because of the heat, this is your weekend to enjoy. A weak disturbance may bring a few scattered showers or storms Sunday into early next week, but it won’t be a washout. Temperatures will remain below average for early August, staying in the mid-80s through early next week before more typical summer heat tries to return by Tuesday.
