DENVER (KDVR) — The current holder of the Ralphie title, Ember, is set to retire after four years of romping on Folsom Field, bringing an end to the era of Ralphie VI, the University of Colorado Boulder announced in a press release on Tuesday afternoon.
Ralphie running around Folsom Field before CU football games has become one of the great spectacles in college sports traditions, but like all hardworking employees, there comes a day when it is time to call it quits.
Ralphie VI, nicknamed Ember, has become indifferent to running the route and will be retired to her ranch, where she will hang out with Ralphie V. The university said that it was in her best interest to focus on relaxing strolls on the pasture, which is her favorite hobby.
“Ember has been excellent in many aspects of her role as Ralphie, but she’s happiest relaxing on the ranch and we want to be respectful of her wishes,” said Taylor Stratton, Director of the Ralphie Live Mascot Program, in the press release. “She will continue to get the same top level of love and care that all of our Ralphies receive and will enjoy socializing with Ralphie V.”
It is out with the old guard and in with the new, as a new Ralphie will assume the mantle and be named Ralphie VII.
The university said a succession plan has been in place for months, but because Ralphie’s health, well-being, safety and happiness are always the top priority, there is no exact timeline for the debut, while Ralphie VII continues her training.
The university said that while Ralphie trains, the team will take the field without a Ralphie appearance on gamedays.
Do you think they are still going to make the Ralphie Handlers sprint a lap around Folsom Field?
