ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – On Sunday, hundreds gathered outside an Albuquerque Walmart after a man was tased by ICE agents. Earlier this month, Deivi Molina-Peña was chased by immigration and customs enforcement into the Walmart near Coors and I-40.
Bystanders caught video of agents tasing him. A spokesperson for ICE says Molina-Peña is from Venezuela and is in the country illegally.
Sunday, protesters gathered outside the store’s front door with many holding signs calling out Walmart for allowing agents in the store, as well as ICE’s recent deportation. “People predominantly here in this community, which you know is majority, Hispanic, people of Latino descent. It showed them that they aren’t safe here,” says community activist Johnny Juarez.
Protesters were peaceful for the most part, Sunday.
At last check, Molina-Peña is not facing any federal charges, only civil penalties for immigration violations. No word on where Molina-Peña is currently being held.
