Aaron Conley
A man on pretrial release in a domestic battery case is now behind bars awaiting trial on charges he tried to murder two men Sunday, one of whom is his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
Pretrial release was denied Tuesday for Aaron Conley, 24, of the 2000 block of Tall Oaks Drive in Aurora. He appeared in the DuPage County Circuit Court’s first-appearance court.
He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon with a prior forcible felony.
According to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office, Conley had agreed to meet the woman at an apartment building in the 500 block of Station Boulevard around 6 a.m. to exchange some items with her.
The woman and the men went to the vestibule of the building. When the men stepped outside, Conley got out of the car he was driving and began shooting them with a .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle, from about 100 feet away, according to the release.
One man was shot in the knee. The other victim was shot multiple times in the chest, thighs, abdomen, and buttocks. He has undergone two surgeries and remains in critical condition in a hospital in Chicago, according to a prosecutor’s petition for pretrial detention.
One of the victims ran off. The other fell to the ground, and Conley ran up and fired at least one more shot, appeared to throw the gun into the car, then ran away.
Authorities said they found the rifle on the floorboard of the car.
Conley turned himself in Monday morning.
According to the petition, the girlfriend had received an order of protection against Conley July 31, but it had not yet been served on him.
Conley was charged July 14 in Kane County with domestic battery against her and granted pretrial release.
