The alleged incident happened back on Jan. 2 near the 1600 block of Northwest 51st Avenue, where officers responded after receiving a report that three dogs had been sprayed with a chemical irritant, police said.
Investigators said the dogs were in a fenced yard when the suspect sprayed them with pepper spray.
Video provided by the dogs’ owner captured the incident and showed them being sprayed multiple times over and through the fence, police said.
The suspect was later identified as Spence, a resident of Fort Lauderdale and a U.S. Postal Service employee who was delivering mail at the time of the incident.
Spence has worked for the Postal Service for about 5 years but his employment status is pending an internal review, officials said.
The dogs were evaluated by a veterinarian and received treatment, and continue to be monitored, police said.
“The Lauderhill Police Department takes all allegations of animal cruelty seriously and reminds the community that intentional acts causing unnecessary suffering to animals are criminal offenses under Florida law,” the department said in a statement.
