New police bodycam footage shows the moment a Fort Lauderdale officer fatally shot a man during an encounter back in January.
The footage released Thursday shows the Jan. 19 shooting of 23-year-old Chad Mabray Jr. by Sgt. Trevor Thomas.
Fort Lauderdale Police officials said Thomas had attempted a traffic stop on a Mercedes driven by Mabray, who refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed.
Minutes later, at a gas station in the 3100 block of Davie Boulevard, Mabray got out of the Mercedes and pulled what appeared to be a gun from his waistband as he tried to flee, police said.
The video showed Thomas open fire, hitting Mabray multiple times. Mabray, of Lauderhill, later died at a local hospital.
“Tango 2. Shots Fired. One in custody, rescue code 3,” an officer said in radio transmissions that were also released Thursday. “Gun in custody, guy in custody.”
Police said the weapon was later determined to be an air-powered replica firearm, but said it didn’t have any colored markings or other indications it was a replica.

Thomas was placed on administrative leave with pay, which is department policy in police shootings.
After the police department reviewed the incident, Thomas was returned to full duty.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, which is also standard policy in police shootings.
