Pete Alonso hasn’t missed a game since 2023, but that streak was in jeopardy on Sunday.
The Mets first baseman was absent from the starting lineup against the Reds with a right-hand contusion — X-rays were negative, according to manager Carlos Mendoza — and it was unclear if Alonso would be available off the bench.
Mark Vientos started at first base in Alonso’s absence. It was Vientos’ third career start and fifth appearance at the position.
Mendoza said he became aware of Alonso’s discomfort following his second at-bat on Saturday. The manager called it “impact” discomfort that worsened.

Alonso, who owns an .892 OPS, played 162 games last season for Mets, and entering Sunday had appeared in all 99 this year.
Alonso’s 353 consecutive games played entering Sunday was the longest streak in franchise history.
