SAN JOSE — A person was hit and killed by a motorist after walking onto a South Bay freeway early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The collision happened around 2:45 a.m. on Interstate 280, near Highway 87, in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol. A Toyota Corolla was travelling southbound in the far right lane at 65 mph when the person stepped into its path.
The person was taken to an area hospital, where they died of their injuries around 3:25 a.m. Sunday. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the person’s identity after officials confirm it, and the next of kin is notified.
The motorist stopped at the scene, the CHP said.
Two of the five lanes of southbound I-280 were closed for an investigation into the collision.
