Today’s Wordle answer (game #1478) is… ATRIA.
Hello, and welcome to the latest instalment of ‘The NYT has added a word and it’s needlessly obscure.’
ATRIA is not a word I’d heard of, let alone used, before. Atrium, sure – I know what that means. And I guess I’m aware of ‘atrial’, as in ‘atrial fibrillation’. But not ATRIA itself.
It is also, of course, a plural – which Wordle doesn’t generally feature. But to be clear here, it only doesn’t feature plurals made by adding an S (or ES) on the end; other types of plural are seemingly fine, and as proof of that, FUNGI was the answer to puzzle #439.
You still wouldn’t necessarily expect one though, even if you were aware that ATRIA was a word.
I was not, and duly scored a four that could otherwise have been a three. That’s frustrating, because the average today is 3.9, and it would have been nice to have dipped below it; I’ve had far too many poor games lately.
I’m surprised ATRIA doesn’t have a higher average, but it will have been heavily skewed by the fact that STARE left only one possible answer and therefore a guaranteed two – well, if people thought of it, and of that there is no guarantee.
I played STARE second, after my initial OUTGO left 357 options, and guessed brilliantly (or luckily), because it immediately cut that list to a single option.
The only problem was, I didn’t think of it at all, and so instead scrabbled around for 15 minutes trying combinations of letters in order to work out what the solution could be.
Eventually, baffled, I gave up and played ACRID. I knew this couldn’t be right, but I figured that a vowel would have to go before my green T, and so I’d rule in/out A from that position, and play the I too.
ACRID gave me a green A at the start, green R in the middle, and a green I too – meaning now the answer had to be ATRI- – at which point, you might think I’d have twigged. But no, it took me another few minutes of trying letters before I decided that ATRIA sounded more likely than ATRIP or ATRIM or ATRIK or anything else that would technically have fit, and so solved it in four. What a strange game.

In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1477, too.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1477) was… BALER.
Some days you just know people are going to struggle as soon as you see the answer. Yesterday was one of those days.
I mean, come on, BALER! BALER? BALER. When did you last use that word in a sentence? Have you ever used that word in a sentence? I’m pretty sure that I haven’t.
There are, of course, some people who will use BALER on a regular basis, namely farmers. I do not know what the percentage is of Wordlers who are also farmers. Presumably it’s not really high, though, because this Wordle answer has an average score of 4.7.
Usually, that would make it the most difficult game of the week – but POPPY just three days ago had a 4.8 rating, so BALER does not quite achieve that status.
It’s still a toughie, though, as most ER games are. The letters are all common – or rather, four of them are, because B is only middling. However, it is the third most likely letter to start an answer, a fact that always surprises me. But if you don’t believe me, check out my analysis of every Wordle answer – it’s true!
I managed to score a four, so am far happier than I was for POPPY, but I did have a slice of luck with my start word. That was CLAMP, and it gave me a yellow L and A. Yes, it left 138 options still – but it set me on my way, and when I followed up with STEAL I uncovered an E, too.
I now had three yellows, and limited ways in which I could arrange them. WordleBot told me later than I now had 24 words left, but I cut that to only one when I played LARGE next. I got lucky, admittedly – I could still have had a four-way choice if the letters had fallen differently – but I reckon I was due a bit of good fortune. Hopefully you had some too.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
