The Arctic air has put New York City Ferry rides on ice.
NYC Ferry service remained suspended Wednesday due to icy conditions in the Hudson and East Rivers as freezing temperatures blanket the metro area, according to the system.
There was no immediate word on when service might return.
“The safety of all crew, passengers and vessels is of the utmost importance, and NYC Ferry crew continues to monitor evolving waterway conditions and prepare the fleet to ensure service can resume once conditions improve,” NYC Ferry said in a service alert. “We will provide ongoing updates regarding resumption of service at ferry.nyc and in the NYC Ferry app.”
The system said Tuesday evening the closure could last several days. All routes were suspended by 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The separately managed Staten Island Ferry continued to run Wednesday on a regular weekday schedule, according to a spokesperson for the city’s transportation department.
Transit officials across the region advised commuters to check ahead on their routes and flights for any weather-related disruptions.
NJ Transit said all bus, rail, light rail and Access Link services were operating on a regular weekday schedule Wednesday.
The MTA said many bus lines across the city were running with delays due to inclement weather. Subway, Metro-North and Long Island Railroad service was mostly running normally as of 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, though LIRR had some delays related to earlier fire department activity near Jamaica, the agency’s app showed.
Dozens of flight delays and cancellations were reported at LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports as of Wednesday morning, according to the tracking service FlightAware. Airport officials encouraged flyers to check with their carriers before heading out.
