Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently made quite a bold suggestion. Miller went through what each MLB team needs to do ahead of the trade deadline. When discussing the St. Louis Cardinals, Miller suggested they could trade Nolan Arenado to the New York Yankees in the coming days.
“If the Cardinals are sellers, Ryan Helsley, Erick Fedde, Steven Matz, Phil Maton and Miles Mikolas are the expiring contracts to unload, while Sonny Gray could be the aforementioned ace the Mets target and Nolan Arenado could be the answer to the Yankees’ hot corner woes,” Miller wrote.
But this idea makes no sense at all for a few reasons.

The Yankees would likely much prefer Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez to Arenado. Suárez isn’t the defender that Arenado is, but he’s a much better hitter.
But the biggest reason why this trade will never happen is Arenado’s contract. First of all, he’s still to be paid quite a bit of money, so if a team trades for him, they’d be committing to paying an aging veteran millions of dollars per year, even if he completely drops off a cliff in terms of production.
Arenado also has a no-trade clause, and he’s already vetoed two potential trades to ship him out of St. Louis. Arenado originally listed six teams, the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets, that he would waive his no-trade clause for.
The Yankees aren’t on this list. There have been no reports indicating he would be willing to be traded to the Bronx. To this point, any Arenado trade buzz to the Yankees is simply that: buzz.
Unless the veteran third baseman has a change of heart in the coming days, this idea is dead.
