NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico voting officials say they’re seeing success from a new program to register voters. New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver said more than 10,000 people are now newly registered voters after the state implemented automatic voter registration at the beginning of July.
In the past, customers were offered an opportunity to register during visits to the New Mexico Motor Vehicles Division. Now, eligible customers are automatically registered when they renew, or apply for a driver’s license or other documents. “With the new program in effect, the very first day we saw 1,500 new or updated voter registrations come through,” said Toulouse Oliver.
Voters who complete the process can still change party affiliation or opt out of the registration. Customers who are not U.S. citizens or people under 18 years old will automatically be screened out of the process.
