Hip-Hop DJ GI Joe to Deliver Keynote at Free Event for Children, Teens and Adults
Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) invites residents of all ages to celebrate music, creativity and community at “Vinyl Day: Just for the Record,” on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library, located at 900 Wayne Ave. in Silver Spring.
This free, all-day event features live DJ performances, hands-on workshops, interactive exhibits and activities for children, teens and adults. It will spotlight the cultural impact of vinyl records, DJing, hip-hop and other creative arts that continue to inspire generations.
The keynote speaker will be DJ GI Joe (Joseph Rivera), a nationally recognized hip-hop DJ, producer and cultural ambassador. Originally from New York City and now based in Boston, DJ GI Joe is known for his work with underground hip-hop artists such as Immortal Technique and Chino XL. In addition to performing, Rivera is dedicated to music education and nonprofit work that empowers young people through the arts.
“I’ve always loved music, and I still remember the feeling of flipping through record bins, looking for that one album I couldn’t wait to play,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “There’s something about holding the music in your hands, reading the liner notes and discovering something new or something you forgot you loved. ‘Vinyl Day’ brings that experience to life while also celebrating the creativity and culture that music inspires. I’m glad our libraries continue to make space for learning, expression and community in ways that are fun and meaningful.”
Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy DJ demonstrations, STEM-music science activities, rocket launches, coding and dance workshops, graffiti and visual art projects, album-cover painting and hands-on DJ experiences. The event highlights MCPL’s commitment to engaging residents through accessible and inclusive cultural programming.
No registration is required. All programs are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Vinyl Day: Just for the Record” is presented in partnership with Levine Music, the Mid-Atlantic Scratch League, and the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County.
