HONOLULU–The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team (1-3) fell to BYU, 4-1 on a rain-soaked day which began with a five-hour rain delay. The Rainbow Warriors came out hot, capturing the doubles point to start the match for the early 1-0 lead. But the Cougars (3-0) roared back to win the first four singles matches for a come-from-behind win on Friday night at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Warriors quickly claimed the doubles point with UH’s No. 2 duo of Toa Maeda and Azuma Visaya defeating BYU’s Caden Hasler and TJ Wells, 6-2. Soon after, Hawai’i’s No. 3 pair of Kent Mueller and Adriano Dzhenev won the doubles point by defeating Tygen Goldammer and Alexander Edmonston also by the score of 6-2.
But BYU then rallied, winning four-straight singles matches to record the 4-1 victory. BYU’s Tygen Goldammer swept Kosuke Nakanishi on the No. 3 court, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, then UH’s Timothy Li fell on the No. 2 court in a momentum swinging match to Yubel Ubri on three, 3-6, 6-1, 2-6. UH’s Dzhenev fought hard on the No. 6 court, but dropped the first and third sets by a break, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, while on the No. 1 court, UH’s Visaya won his opening set, but fell in the second in a tiebreaker before succumbing to Adam Chodur, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. In the second set tie-breaker, Visaya found himself down, 5-0 before winning five-straight point to knot the breaker at 5-5, but Chodur won the final two-points to even the match at a set apiece.
The Rainbow Warriors have a quick turnaround as they will closeout their nearly month-long opening homestand with a dual match against Portland on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 4:00 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex.
