A mass infection has hit a cruise ship as 36 passengers have fallen ill – the Moscow Tourist Fleet company, which owns the boat, also saw a previous infection outbreak hit another ship earlier this month
Infection has broken out on a cruise ship with reports claiming 36 passengers have fallen ill. The ship – named the Nikolai Karamzin – belongs to the Moscow Tourist Fleet. Infected passengers have been hit with various symptoms common in intestinal infections such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
Tests have taken place onboard the Russian ship to determine the cause of the outbreak – crew mates have been tested alongside water samples.
Upset customers have written complaints to Rospotrebnadzor, the Russian federal agency for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare – the federal body responsible for the supervision of consumer rights, protection and wellbeing.
This case comes after another outbreak hit a separate Russian tourist vessel, the Mikhail Bulgakov, earlier this month. This vessel also belongs to Moscow Tourist Fleet.
The Daily Star previously reported on another cruise ship that saw around 60 passengers complaining of severe illness while onboard a P&O cruise ship. The disgruntled passengers are pursuing legal action after their luxury holidays turned into what they describe as “nightmare” experiences.
The holidaymakers claim to have suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea after embarking on the MV Ventura for sun-soaked getaways around the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. Many were restricted to their cabins due to gastric illnesses on what they label as a “filthy” ship, with some still experiencing effects months later. Complaints ranged from the ship appearing grubby and dilapidated to flies buzzing around the buffet area, which was left uncovered.
Scores of passengers are now taking legal action against P&O’s parent company, Carnival UK, following reported illness outbreaks onboard the cruise liner over the past two years. Among them is Jason Howard, 53, and his sons Lewis, 14, and Jacob, 12, who embarked on the Ventura in Southampton on May 24 for a week-long cruise around Spain and France. The trip, costing the family nearly £3,000, was booked to celebrate Lewis’ birthday, reports the Mirror.
Just two days into the holiday, Lewis was hit with diarrhoea and vomiting, with Jacob exhibiting the same symptoms two days later. The family, hailing from Worthing, West Sussex, were advised to isolate in their room, and it wasn’t long before Jason, a personal trainer, also fell ill with similar symptoms.
Lewis and Jacob bounced back to full health after a few days. However, Jason’s symptoms lingered, with him complaining of bloating, headaches, and dizziness, in addition to persistent bowel issues.
A spokeswoman for P&O Cruises responded: “We have received a letter from a law firm and we are investigating the allegations made.”
