Eleanor Farnsworth fondly remembers riding the New Orleans streetcar as a child and always admiring the “iconic” mansion that stood out at the corner of St. Charles and Nashville Avenue.
“It is one of my all-time favorite houses. I remember as a kid when the streetcar would approach it, I would get ready to look at how the stunning architecture and grande style of this iconic mansion proudly presented itself and presided over St. Charles Avenue,” said Farnsworth, realtor with Latter & Blum | Compass. A native New Orleanian, Farnsworth has sold homes for over 40 years and holds a Historic Residential Specialist (HRS) designation.
On June 30, Farnsworth saw that admiration of the mansion come full circle as she had the honor of being the listing agent on 5800 St. Charles Ave., which sold for $3,553,000. The sales agent was June Logan of Keller Williams Realty.
The Italianate home, which features a classic center hall design, includes 5 bedrooms, 6 full bathrooms, 2 half-bathrooms, and 7,312 square feet of living space on a total area of 10,219 square feet.
It was recently renovated by local prominent architect Michael Carbine, who is always known for renovating and restoring historic homes across New Orleans.
An elegant wrought iron fence surrounds the expansive corner lot, while an abundance of mature shade trees, a vast emerald lawn, and tropical landscaping fill out the front yard. A sweeping staircase leads to the five bay gallery studded with majestic Corinthian columns. Additional Corinthian column motifs surround the double-leaded glass front door.
“I have always been fascinated by the majestic Corinthian columns, the front gallery where you can watch and hear Uptown life on St. Charles go by, and a sweeping staircase that looks like it has wide open arms to gracefully welcome you into this exceptional home,” said Farnsworth. “Everyone local knows this home on St. Charles and appreciates its beauty and history. It was cool to field calls from people who just wanted to tell stories of knowing someone who lived there, or their experiences visiting the home throughout the years. It is admired by many.”
Inside, architectural details include soaring ceilings, elaborate plaster friezes and ceiling appliqués, chandeliers, double and triple crown molding, handsome millwork, carved marble mantles, a gracefully curving staircase, and gleaming hardwood floors. The classic center hall design and entry hall leads to an expansive formal living room with built-in bookshelves, illuminated by a pair of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the front porch and grounds.
There is a formal dining room that has an adjoining wet bar and butler’s pantry. A sunroom offers three walls of plate glass windows with views of the grounds. The chef’s kitchen boasts stainless steel appliances, stone counters, a large island, storage space, and a huge pantry. The kitchen leads to a breakfast area illuminated by a trio of French doors opening onto a large, covered balcony.
There is a second living room across from the formal living room that lends flexibility to the floor plan, and there is a well-appointed study that leads to a powder room.
The main floor primary suite includes a spacious bedroom and a marble bathroom with double vanities, a soaking tub, a separate shower, a water closet, two separate enormous closets, a dressing room, and a private laundry room. The second floor includes a large den, three additional bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a second office with an attached full bathroom. The basement includes finished recreation space, a bath and a half, a kitchen, a laundry room, wine cellar, workshop, and additional storage space.
There is a two-car garage, plus additional parking behind an electric gate. The fully fenced yard has matured shade trees and manicured hedges, in addition to a large, swimming pool surrounded by an emerald, green lawn across the vast backyard space.
