DENVER (KDVR) — A Trinidad man was sentenced to 13 years in prison after crashing a stolen vehicle into a police car during a high-speed chase in the Castle Rock Outlets.
On Tuesday, the 23rd Judicial District said Roy Allen Elliott Casaus, 33, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to assault on a peace officer, aggravated motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding.
This comes after the district said Castle Rock FLOCK cameras found a stolen vehicle out of Englewood in January 2022. Castle Rock Police were about to locate the car at the Castle Rock Outlets by using drone technology.
The district said police waited for Elliott Casaus to get in the stolen vehicle, then they tried to pin the car. Elliott Casaus then rammed the officers’ vehicles and took off in a “dramatic high-speed chase.” Police dash camera footage shows Elliott Casaus driving through a median before crashing into a patrol car.
Elliott-Casaus then took off on foot, but was arrested after a short chase.
“Casaus thought he could outrun law enforcement in a stolen car-but crashing into reality, literally, brought his joy ride to an end,” said Deputy DA Jonathan Steinberg with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office. “Actions have consequences, especially when public safety is at risk.”
The district said his 13-year sentence will be served consecutively with a 6-year sentence for an unrelated crime in Las Animas County.
“Thirteen years isn’t just punishment- it’s protection for the community,” said Deputy DA Joe Ratner. “This defendant treated a shopping center like a racetrack. Now he’s off the streets.”
