A man died after a police officer in an NYPD car ran over him as he lay on a road in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens over the weekend, according to department officials.
Police said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on United Nations Avenue South, one of the paved paths near the Queens Theatre, New York State Pavilion and the park’s iconic Unisphere. They said the officer was driving a marked NYPD Ford Taurus west and ran over the man, who was lying face up on the roadway.
Officials said officers were performing a routine patrol in the park, which is currently hosting the U.S. Open tennis tournament. The car was going about 10 mph at the time of the incident, according to the NYPD. The officer who was driving stayed at the scene.
Emergency medical responders took the man to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The NYPD did not immediately identify him as officials worked to notify his family.
Detectives early Monday were still investigating why the man was lying in the path, as well as other circumstances surrounding the incident, police said.
Officials did not specify how many officers were in the car. The city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was working to determine the man’s cause of death, according to the NYPD.
