WASHINGTON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A man was convicted on Wednesday, June 25 of second-degree murder, assault by drive-by shooting and illegal use of weapons in a Bogalusa killing.
According to the District Attorney’s office, 25-year-old Christian Myers, of Bogalusa, drove the vehicle involved in the killing of 50-year-old Veronique Allen. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison on the second-degree murder charge, up to five years on the drive-by shooting charge and up to two years for illegal use of weapons.
Myers’s sentencing date is set for July 21.
According to the DA’s office, on August 23, 2022, Bogalusa police responded to reports of a shooting on Main Street. They found Allen with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses described a normal family gathering interrupted by gunfire from outside. Several bullets penetrated the house, one of which struck Allen.
Detectives were able to find the license plate number of the car from nearby surveillance footage. The Lafayette Police Department was able to locate the vehicle. When officers attempted to stop the car, it fled. During the pursuit, the occupants ditched the car and fled on foot.
According to the DA’s office, surveillance footage showed one of the occupants running away. This was shown to relatives of Allen. The DA’s office said they all identified him as Christian Myers.
An arrest warrant was issued for Myers. Detectives attempted to find him and learned he fled to New York or Maine. Several months later, Myers was arrested by Maine police officers and sent back to Washington Parish.
The DA’s office said Myer’s admitted to being the driver of the vehicle during the shooting. He said he had “beef” with a man who turned out to be a relative of the victim. Armed with weapons, Myers and several other men rode around Bogalusa looking for their intended target. One of the occupants riddled the house with gunfire, killing Allen. Myers said they then drove to Lafayette.
