LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A Laurel County man is in jail after deputies say he led them on a chase, caused a crash, and fled into the woods before being captured.
According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a fight at an apartment complex Saturday night when a car sped away from the scene. During the pursuit, deputies say the driver slammed on his brakes on a wet roadway, causing a pursuing cruiser to crash.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Michael Root Jr., then ran into the woods. Deputies used a drone to locate him and arrested him without further incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office
Root is facing multiple charges, including fleeing or evading police and wanton endangerment. Deputies say he also had three outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
The deputy involved in the crash was treated and released from the hospital.
